Netflix - The Two Sides of Christmas

Netflix has a highly engaged social following, meaning every post is scrutinised and debated by their followers. So, as December approached, Netflix had a problem on their hands. They were putting Christmas classics back on their platform, such as Home Alone, Elf and Love Actually, but were simultaneously adding Netflix originals like Bird Box; a zombie movie about a post-apocalyptic world without a Brussel sprout in sight. They had something for everyone at Christmas time, but it was hard to be both ‘Jingle Bells’ and ‘Bah Humbug’ at the same time.

So, instead of using the festive season as a time to unite people around a crackling fire, we thought: why not play into the divide between Christmas lovers and haters?

We used irreverent ‘Netflix playlist suggestions’ as the antidote to the festive complaints, responding directly to anti-Christmas tweets and demonstrating the breadth of content Netflix has to offer. So, when one follower posted "I hate Christmas shopping, too many bloody people", we posted back a unique URL to a Netflix playlist full of films about being alone. We also created an accompanying video, pitting comedians against each other to debate the merits of Christmas, and continue to fuel the love-hate debate across social media.
