Don’t Panic Presents… SEAHORSE

We don’t only love taking creative risks – we also love hearing about fellow risk-takers. That’s why we regularly organise talks from inspiring individuals who’ve dared to do things differently.

This month, Don’t Panic presented the new feature-length documentary ‘Seahorse’ at 76 Dean Street. The stunning documentary was shot by Jeanie Finlay and features the incredible Freddy McConnel. If you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing the film, it takes you through Freddy’s journey as a young, gay, transgender man as well as portraying his quest to fulfil an instinctive, insatiable desire: to start his own family.

The Journey

The film shows his emotional journey of pregnancy, from conception to birth, the beautiful intimate moments, and the challenges and hardships he faced along the way. Many of these were anticipated (morning sickness, fatigue, struggling to fit into his clothes), but it’s those that weren’t anticipated that provided the most insight. The screening was followed by a Q&A with Freddy and the master documentarian behind the film, Jeanie Finlay. A host of interesting questions and discussions were raised around the film, such as:

  • transphobia in the workplace

  • the challenges of being an introvert while having one of the most intimate stages of life filmed for a documentary

  • the meaning of the term ‘Seahorse’ in the trans community

  • support networks

  • the NHS

  • hormones

  • infertility

  • the challenges of society’s understanding.

Seahorse is an outstanding, must-see documentary that will open up a wider dialogue around pregnancy, gender and identity in the trans community, as well as promoting the understanding of diversity. See the trailer for the film below:
