Poverty Is Sexist: None of Us Are Equal Until All of Us Are Equal

In our latest work with One.org we created a short powerful film ‘Poverty Is Sexist’. The film travels the globe to bring to light the fact that there is categorically nowhere in the world where women have the same opportunities as men. As a direct result of this women who are the hardest hit by gender inequality are the ones most likely to live in extreme poverty, “Our message with this campaign and this film is that it’s time to stop leaving the women who are the most disenfranchised out of the conversation”

The Film: Poverty is Sexist

The film shows women and girls all over the world being told ‘No’ at every stage and in every aspect of their lives, with devastating consequences. Our aim was to bring to the forefront issues of enforced gender roles, the unequal treatment of women in the workplace and child marriage, as well as several other factors that contribute to women leading lives that are less than they deserve. None of what is shown in the film has been based off assumptions, but instead true events and news stories.Every scene has been crafted so that it reflects real issues faced by real women.

The Powerful Message: None of Us Are Equal Until All of Us Are Equal

We wanted to create a film that would not just create feelings of empathy and raise awareness to these issues. But something that everyone and anyone can relate to. “You don’t need to be a girl in Uganda to understand what it would mean to be held back from school because you have your period. You don’t need to be a woman in Congo to imagine what it would feel like to be denied a bank loan because you don’t have a husband.” The film is a direct call to activists, but there is a powerful message contained within it that we truly believe speaks to everyone. None of us are equal until all of us are equal.
